Facebook last week launched its Coronavirus Information Center available across Sub-Saharan Africa. The initial list of 18 countries, however, did not include Ghana.
The tech giant has now added the West African nation to that list, meaning the project is now available in 19 countries across the region.
Ghana’s inclusion on the list of countries with the Coronavirus Information Centers is good news for Facebook’s huge user base in the country. Ghanaians can now access all the latest news and COVID-19 related information, all trustworthy health authorities. Users will also access other useful health tips and resources that will help advance healthy practices among communities.
Coronavirus Information Center
Those logging into Facebook will find the Coronavirus Information Centre right at the top of their News Feed. Here everyone can be a part of an informed community regarding the virus.
The feed provides real-time updates on the virus, both from national health officials and the World Health Organization (WHO). Users also have access to several resources like articles, videos, and posts. All these resources are useful in imparting knowledge about the disease. It also is a place where users get reminders about the importance of aspects like social distancing and hand washing.
To use the feature, Facebook users have the option of opting in. Once they do that, they will receive notifications and updates health authorities issue from time to time.
According to Adaora Ikenze, the Head of Public Policy for Facebook in Anglophone West Africa, the launch of the Information Centre is out of Facebook’s commitment to ensuring information and news about the pandemic is timely and accurate.
