Econet Partnership With Alphabet to Broaden Network Connectivity in Africa

Share

TechInAfrica – In partnership with X’s Project Taara – Alphabet’s moonshot factory (previously known as Google [x]), Econet will broaden and increase the affordable and high-speed connectivity to communities across Sub-Saharan Africa.

This collaboration becomes the first-launched wireless optical communication technology by Taraa in Africa. Taraa’s connections bring fiber-like speed internet access in places where it’s not economically practicable, unavailable to install fiber. For instance, the areas include rivers or in places where it is dangerous to dig trenches for cables.

Taraa’s technology will be distributed in Africa by Econet across Liquid Telecom’s Fibre Optic Backbone and Mobile Network Infrastructure starting in Kenya.

According to Econet’s Executive for New Enterprises, Norman Moyo, the technology and its partnership with Taraa bring a significant break up towards acquiring Econet’s vision of a digitally connected future that makes no African behind.

The pilot test of this technology has been operating by Liquid Telekom and X since 2009 in Kenya. The test includes the areas across the waters between Mombasa Old Town and Diani in Kwale County, Kenya to provide high-speed bandwidth to communities on the South Coast.

The CEO of Liquid Telecom, Nic Rudnick said that Liquid Telekom aims to support African for economic prosperity by using technology. The trial conducted in Kenya has presented supporting results of how Liquid Telekom can reach underserved areas with immense bandwidths as well as grow its network reliability.
