Vantage Data Centers, an American IT company has begun the construction of a new R15bn data center campus. The first phase of the project (80MW) will go online in the third quarter of 2022 and will be based in Waterfall, Gauteng.
Hyperscale data centers are large facilities allowing tech companies, cloud providers, and enterprises to drastically increase their computing capability. This is the company’s first center in South Africa and the continent at large. The Johannesburg campus will comprise three facilities across 12 hectares covering 60,000 square meters of data center space when fully developed – making it the continent’s largest.
The companies behind the construction of the project are Attacq Limited, Reit (listed on the JSE) is partnering with Vantage to develop a campus tailored to meet the requirements of Vantage’s global campus blueprint.
The campus includes permeable landscaping and natural on‐site drainage aimed at protecting natural resources. Vantage in turn will invest in recycling, motion‐sensor LED lighting, incremental energy, and savings throughout its campus – not forgetting electric charging stations.
To help meet energy needs, the campus will feature dedicated on-site, high-voltage substations. They will undergo cooling using highly efficient, closed-loop chilled water systems. On completion of the project, Vantage will have a footprint in 5 continents.
