Telecom Egypt  and Tejas Networks, an Indian company specializing in optical, broadband, and data networking products, have entered into a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing telecom R&D, establishing manufacturing facilities, and fostering skill development in Egypt.

With its proven track record in implementing the Bharatnet (Rural Broadband Project) and NKN (National Knowledge Network) projects in Egypt, Tejas Networks is well-equipped to leverage its experience in this field.

In addition to the partnership, Tejas Network will set up technical support services in Egypt to provide assistance to customers in the country as well as across the wider Africa and Middle East region.

According to Amr Talaat, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, the partnership aims to facilitate the localization of top-tier communication products, attract new Indian investments to Egypt, generate employment opportunities, and cultivate research expertise across various communication domains.

Mr. Anand Athreya, CEO and Managing Director of Tejas Networks, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to bolstering Egypt’s local telecom ecosystem. This includes support for manufacturing, research and development, network planning, installation, and maintenance.

Telecom Egypt’s recent move to secure a 5G license comes just a month after it made history as the first mobile operator in the country to receive such a license. The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) granted the company a 15-year, $150 million license to operate 5G in January 2024.

Telecom Egypt has made significant strides in enhancing its network infrastructure and technical capabilities. In February 2024, the mobile operator forged a strategic partnership with 4iG, a leading Hungarian IT solutions provider, to establish a high-speed subsea cable linking Albania to Egypt.

Upon completion, the project will establish a high-capacity connection linking Africa and Asia to Europe through Egypt, the Mediterranean, and Albania.

In the same month, Telecom Egypt, Telin, and e& Carrier & Wholesale Services joined forces to form a consortium aimed at advancing the ICE IV Project. This initiative entails the development of a subsea cable system that will connect the Intra Asia region to India and the Middle East.

According to a report by Mordor Intelligence, Egypt’s Telecom Market revenue is projected to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.65% over the next five years.
