The two Kenyan organizations are the only representatives from Africa that will gain access to over $20 million in funding for their projects.
Google.org the philanthropic division of Google, has selected Kenya’s Jacaranda Health and EIDU as the sole beneficiaries from Africa in the inaugural Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI Cohort. These organizations are two of 21 nonprofits chosen to participate.
Jacaranda Health uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) trained in African languages to broaden digital health services for underserved mothers, while EIDU applies generative AI to deliver personalized tutoring services in low- and middle-income countries through customized digital learning exercises.
The six-month program aims to support nonprofits developing high-impact generative AI applications in areas like climate, economic opportunities, health, education, and crisis response. Participants will benefit from technical training, workshops, mentors, and pro bono assistance from dedicated AI coaches. Google.org will also provide more than $20 million in funding across the selected projects.
Dorothy Ooko, Google’s Head of Communications and Public Affairs in Africa, emphasized, “Generative AI can enable social impact teams to work more productively, creatively, and efficiently as they serve their communities. We’re excited to support the selected organizations in leveraging this technology to address some of the continent’s most critical challenges.”
A recent survey by Google.org revealed that four out of five nonprofits recognize the potential of generative AI to enhance their work. However, almost half face barriers such as a lack of tools, awareness, training, and funding needed for its adoption.
This diverse group also includes organizations from the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
