OpenAI Introduces Canvas: A New Interactive Interface for ChatGPT Users

Share

OpenAI is set to introduce a new feature called “Canvas,” which provides users with additional space to work within the app or site. This feature is akin to a mini workstation where users can brainstorm, write down ideas, code, and engage in a variety of tasks.

Described as a fresh interface for interacting with ChatGPT, Canvas allows users to edit and reorganize lengthy texts or code generated by the AI chatbot. Though it’s still in beta, early demonstrations show that it functions similarly to the “Artifacts” feature that Anthropic integrated into Claude some time ago.

However, unlike Anthropic’s approach, OpenAI has made this a premium feature for now. Currently, it’s being rolled out globally to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu users expected to have access by next week. Free ChatGPT users, on the other hand, will need to wait until the feature is out of beta.

When ClaudeAI introduced its feature, the intention was to make the interaction with its AI chatbot more seamless and user-friendly, thereby improving the bot’s performance. OpenAI seems to have a similar goal with Canvas, as it was developed to enhance tasks previously limited by the standard interface.

According to OpenAI’s research, Canvas outperformed GPT-4o by 18% in writing and coding tasks. Additionally, human evaluations ranked the Canvas model 30% more accurate and 16% better in quality than GPT-4o.

As more users begin to explore this new feature, it will be interesting to see how it performs in real-world scenarios compared to Claude’s Artifact.

All in all, OpenAI’s Canvas feature looks to be a significant enhancement to the ChatGPT platform. Its potential to boost productivity, collaboration, and overall user experience makes it a promising tool for writers, coders, and researchers alike.
