Starlink Launches in Liberia

Starlink, the satellite internet service from SpaceX, has officially launched operations in Liberia. This development marks the company’s first market entry into Africa in 2025, paving the way for broader expansion across the continent. The milestone follows a one-year licensing agreement signed between Starlink and the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), aimed at expanding high-speed internet access, particularly in remote and underserved areas of the country.

This initiative has been welcomed by LTA officials as a significant step in advancing Liberia’s digital transformation agenda. With internet penetration currently at 30%, LTA’s Acting Chairperson, Abdullah Kamara, expressed optimism about Starlink’s potential to enhance nationwide coverage to nearly 100%. To support this effort, the Liberia Revenue Authority has already received 50 Starlink satellite terminals, valued at USD 162,000, to improve connectivity across its offices nationwide.

Kamara further highlighted the service’s impact on critical institutions across Liberia, including hospitals, schools, and government offices. “This means that town halls, clinics, and schools all over Liberia will now have the opportunity to sign on to Starlink services,” he stated.

Liberia now joins a group of seventeen other African countries leveraging Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to deliver nationwide satellite internet services. Starlink plans to expand operations to additional countries across the continent in 2025.
