The names of all finalists of the 2018 edition of the Innovative Justice Challenge have been announced. A total of 33 legal tech startups and justice innovators have been published by the Hiil Justice Accelerator (HJA) that runs the challenge announced by the group at the beginning of July 2018. According to HJA, the finalists were selected based on their team, uniqueness, sustainability, scalability, and impact. The accelerator also considered the social impact, feasibility and institutional challenges that the startups are going through.
The 33 will join other finalists from Ukraine, the Netherlands, Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh in training and pitching event that will take place in September 2018. The finalists from African are from 10 African countries that are Uganda, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, and Benin. Uganda has the highest number of startups in the group of 33. Below are the countries the number of finalists from there.
Uganda
Zzimba Games (ZG): the startup is making the justice ecosystem simpler by simulating experience in Uganda using an entertaining board game and card that reflects their environment. It also instills in them knowledge and education about the Ugandan legal system.
Prison Officer Legal Empowerment (POLE) Model: the platform empowers poor and prison communities with legal knowledge. Its goal is to be incorporated into the prison’s training curriculum.
LegalIT: This is a self-service site that gives small businesses to process legal documents through a convenient, efficient and affordable means.
JusticeBot: The platform offers users in need of legal services with access to legal services, information, and legal procedures.
BitShelter: This is an interactive system which collects shares and displays legal information such as audio, text, video, and images in real time.
Via: the platform is a conversational legal site which maximizes on artificial intelligence to give legal information and also recommend for them a layer.
Yunga: a local rescue digital platform designed to allow neighbors to communicate with one another in case of an attack.
Tunga Innovations: This is an application that tells users about their employment rights.
Bataka Court Model: The community based informal justice model gives an alternative justice mechanism to allow the poor to get justice.
Kenya
iCourtroom: This is a repository of wildlife crime data designed to offer quicker, effective and more efficient process of data entry and analysis of wildlife crime. It also serves as a measure of law enforcement efficacy.
WASILIANAHUB: This is a partnership mobile and online tech justice marketplace developing largest certified professional mediator’s platform for Africa.
Wakili Mkononi: The social enterprise gives legal aid services and legal networking services through its digital site.
Uliza Wakili: A group of mediators, arbitrators, and lawyers who offer SMEs and startups with cheap means of alternative dispute resolution.
Loyasoft: This is a platform that gives startups with access to qualified lawyers and template data, allowing them to solve legal issues at a cheaper cost.
Btrack Global: The platform has created a tracking device that owners of the motorcycle to easily track their motorcycles through their mobile phones in the event of theft.
South Africa
Portable Lawyer: The startup allows for easy and affordable access to over 30 critical contracts, quickly demanded legal support, data protection, digital signatures and contract management compliant.
Buyisa Soul and Spiritual Centre: The hub is located in a medication court in Alexandra township Johannesburg that is occupied by traditional healers, and it aims to use the process to offer more access to justice.
Masenze Strategic Advisors: It offers a convenient, relevant and affordable knowledge concerning awareness of basic socio-economic rights to enable self-representation by the marginalized and vulnerable.
Baobab: The platform allows lawyers to develop engaging video-based tutorials, to empower individuals to resolve a lot of their legal issues.
Epoq Legal: This is a legal document service that offers real-time guidance and assistance around the development of legal documents used by businesses.
Nigeria
NoMore (nomore.ng): Nigerian university female students will be in a position to secretly report cases of abuse, rape, and sexual harassment through the platform.
Gavel: The civic tech startup aims at using tech to improve the speed of delivering justice. It does that by tracking criminal cases, and police brutality complaints. Moreover, users are linked to free legal aid lawyers through the site.
Legal Support LITTE: This is a USSD, and interactive voice response based solution that gives free, efficient and custom made legal advice to SMEs.
FarmworkerzApp: The digital platforms aims to link vetted farm-hands to potential farms for hiring anywhere in real time to do away with conflict farm owners and workers.
In4Justice: It aims to offer speedy and easy accessible settlement of the small claims dispute.
Zimbabwe
IPassist-zw: Based on the website the platform allows startups and other SMEs to access effective and affordable intellectual property services from a team of lawyers and experts.
PhoenixCMS: A digital platform Phoenix Case Management System, enhances justice groups’ case tracking, intake, resolution of reported cases, data analysis and multi-sectoral coordination.
Tanzania
Nusu Hub: This is a marketplace that allows low-income earners and rural resides a chance to hire legal professionals. All are pre-screened and vetted.
Sierra Leone:
Fix Solution: This is an all in one digital crime records management app that serves to improve judicial service delivery using the whole chain of justice.
Rwanda
Viamo: The social enterprise is developing data on access to justice that will be available on demand in pre-recorded text and audio. It does that on a toll-free mobile service under the shortcode845 with the backing of MTN.
Ghana
Kompliance: The small business registration site allows firms to develop and run their legal documents. It also offers them a chance to access legal services at an affordable cost.
Benin
HeLawyer: The mobile app specializes in legal advice. It gives citizens real-time legal advice and information.
