TechInAfrica — The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Center for Africa built a sub-regional center of excellence as a support for Southern African countries to meet the SDGs and the African Union’s (AU) Agenda 2063. It will be situated in Lusaka, Zambia with the help of the Government of Zambia in providing for the services and facilities.
In order to support the implementation of SDG in line with Agenda 2063, African leaders follow a resolution by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) by establishing the SDGC/A in July 2016.
Kigali-based SDGC/A plays the role to create partnerships across the SDGs to assure that their implementation is effective. On 23 September 2018, SDGC/A and the Government of Liberia entered an agreement to establish a West African sub-regional center in order to support SDG implementation in the Mano River Union countries and members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The agreement was signed by Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Malanji. Malanji said even though Zambia is a ‘landlocked’ country, the country is also ‘land-linked. He moreover said that the Host Country Agreement covers the Government of Zambia’s aspiration to encourage the SDGs agenda in Africa.
The center operates under the oversight of the SDGC/A headquarters in Rwanda. It will work with governments as well as stakeholders to set the region’s priorities and facilitate engagement on and make sure that implementation of the SDGs in line with the priorities.
