Tech in Africa
Innovators across the African education sector received awards at the 2021 RewirEd Summit – held at the Expo 2020 Dubai. The summit, led by Dubai Cares, was hosted in partnership with other global stakeholders.
IEA program was established in 2018 and has identified 140 innovations drawn from 40 African countries while investing up to $500,000 in the promotion and support of growth. This year’s finalists were presented to the World by the AU at the Expo 2020 Dubai. The 5 finalists had outshone 50 of their counterparts in the preliminary rounds and are now pitched in front of a global audience. The Innovating Education in Africa (IEA) is one of the flagship programmes of the African Union Commission and Partners, looking towards enhancing access, quality, relevance, and inclusion in education. This will release the full potential of empowerment, employability, and inventiveness – one of the policy positions in the Continental Education Strategy for Africa.
Of the 5 innovators, 3 received grant awards aimed at undertaking pilots collaborations with other African Union Member States, thus creating reference points for scaling their innovations in education and training.
Rudolf Ampopo the CEO of Craft Education, a Ghana teletherapy platform raised $100,000. The education technology social enterprise allows African parents and teachers to help children with learning difficulties to develop proper communication, social interaction and academic skills.
Elijah Lubala, co-founder of Solar-FI, a DRC company offering simple yet inexpensive solar mobile Wi-Fi hotspot access points, received $70,000 towards award for their project.
Samson W Muwanguzi of Yiya Air Science received $40,000 for their innovation that provides remote learning through widely accessible technology that helps remote students in Uganda learn Maths and Science.
