AltSchool, a Nigerian edtech startup, has unveiled a new initiative aimed at providing Africans with access to AI education. Named “AI for 10M Africans,” the program is designed to assist individuals at every stage of learning how to harness the power of AI.
During a media briefing, Adewale Yusuf, CEO of AltSchool Africa, emphasized that the AI for 10M Africans initiative ensures that “Africans are not left behind.” He described the initiative as “more than just an educational program; it is a movement to create opportunities and close the knowledge gap.”
The program will cater to learners of all levels, starting with foundational courses aimed at helping users understand AI and dispelling common myths surrounding it. These introductory courses will then be followed by more advanced and technical courses, exploring topics such as machine learning, data science, and AI engineering.
Unlike the foundational courses, technical-level courses will come with a fee. However, AltSchool acknowledged that the success of this initiative relies heavily on the collaboration and partnership of organizations, government bodies, and industry leaders.
“We must incorporate this into our school curriculums because the world is evolving every day,” said Yusuf. He further emphasized that while the startup has had the opportunity to collaborate with various African nations, including Nigeria, Rwanda, and Cape Verde, more effort is required to help Africans recognize how to leverage AI.
Foluso Folorunso, Senior Product Designer at AltSchool, explained that the initiative aims to position Africa as more than just a consumer of AI products. “The world is rapidly changing; AI is transforming industries, yet Africa remains largely absent from this transformation.”
To encourage widespread adoption across the continent, Folorunso emphasized that the courses will be available in various languages, including Swahili, French, Portuguese, Arabic, and Hausa.
At the same time, AltSchool is preparing to launch hybrid learning programs with its new offering, “Campus by AltSchool.” Designed to enhance course completion rates and provide an immersive learning experience, the physical classes will begin at two locations in Lagos. The program is scheduled to roll out in Q2 2025, with Lagos and Kigali identified as potential hubs.
As AltSchool introduces these new initiatives, the startup is also forging scholarship partnerships with organizations like Binance and Bybit to ensure the programs are accessible to individuals who may not have the financial means to afford them.
