Armenia and Egypt Strengthen the Bilateral Ties Between Them

In a meeting held in Cairo Egypt on 17th December 2017, by the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the House of Representatives in partnership with the ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Egypt, Armen Melkonian involved the discussion of bilateral relations between the two countries. In the meeting, Armenia had shown the dedication of extending its economic relation with Egypt. To them, Egypt is seen as one of the important countries in both Africa and Middle-East.

According to Melkonian, Armenian Parliament formed the Armenian-Egyptian Friendship Association, asking the Egyptian parliament to do the same to help the two parliaments promote bilateral relations between the two countries. It was discovered that almost 12,000 tourists had visited Egypt in 2017. The most visited area being Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh. The tourism leads to facilitating of flights between Hurghada to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia and Sharm El-Sheikh.

The information technology field was another sector where Armenia wanted to improve on further. That was replicated by the visit paid earlier on by Armenian delegation to Egypt in 2010 which brought them and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology on the same table. Egypt had received praises from European countries for stopping illegal migration, refugee crisis, and terrorism. There was 5million refugee in Egypt who were all provided with all the required educational and health requirements.

The diplomatic relation between the two countries was launched in March 1992. Within six months after the launch, the Armenian embassy was started in Egypt, and the Egypt embassy in Yerevan become operational in April 1993. Melkonian became the ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Egypt, and Wahid Galal was appointed in 2007 as the ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Egypt to Armenia Egypt in June 2009.

Some agreements have been signed between the two countries including the agreement on establishing diplomatic relations came in 1992, technical and scientific cooperation in May of 1992, agreement on economics and the agreement for cooperation in the agriculture field was signed in 1997.
