TechInAfrica – Asikana Network has announced the launch of eZibo Digital Literacy program in partnership with Facebook on Thursday (12/09). The program is meant to educate the youth on maintaining a safe online presence while also sharing practical tips and guides to delve their way through the digital medium.
It is a Zambia-based social enterprise which has been focusing on women and girls’ contribution to technology. The program will train youth within the age range of 13 to 18 years old in Zambian schools, and it will challenges the participating students about their online self-awareness and online attitude so that they understand the concept of a model digital citizen and the application of it.
Emilar Gandhi, the Head of Public Policy fr the SADC region at Facebook said that the internet is a gateway to a world of economic opportunities, educational possibilities, and friendships for many young Zambians. He also noted that it is just as important for these students to know the ways to protect themselves, their privacy, such as their personal information, and this is done by safeguarding themselves on their online track. As a representative of Facebook, he stated it has been one of Facebook’s commitment, and that he hopes the organization will be able to make the young people feel empowered while increasing their awareness as both are deemed equally important.
The program will include the set of materials delivery provided by Asikana Network and Facebook for a 2 hour each day session after school hours, from September to December. Asikana Network is responsible for administering the basic curriculum of eZibo as well as Facebook’s lessons on safety and the resources available to the students. It will be carried out across 30 schools of the 6 provinces, which are Lusaka, Central, Eastern, Southern, Wester, Copperbelt, and also in 6 community schools where the training will be available for the public.
