TechInAfrica – Both Cassava Smartech and Comviva have jointly won the East Africa Com Award in the category of Changing Lives for its EcoCash mobile money service. The Award event was held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya a few days ago.

EcoCash mobile money service has been implemented in Zimbabwe to address the cash challenges in the country, providing the opportunity of financial inclusion to the unbanked population. The mobile money service is made easily accessible, quick, affordable, secure, and convenient.

EcoCash service is powered by Comviva’s mobiquity Money platform. Since the inception of its first peer-to-peer money transfer in 2011, the service has created a cash-light economy, value for the underserved segments, established financial infrastructure, as well as generated employment in Zimbabwe.

“This award validates our efforts in bringing innovative fintech services to the forefront. Cassava’s EcoCash in Zimbabwe is one such service which has replaced cash and is helping in building a cash-light economy. Today, more than 80 percent of the country’s adult population use EcoCash. The service has brought many financially-excluded people into formal financial ecosystem, increasing financial inclusion in the country from below 40% to over 80%,” said Anil Krishnan, Head of Africa Region of Comviva.

The East Africa Com Awards celebrate and recognize the achievements of companies and individuals for their innovation that brings innovation and social impact.
