CBi Innovations Limited (CBiIL), the for-profit arm of the Convention on Business Integrity, has announced it will use its SAP Rural Sourcing Management solution to help smallholder farmers to increase food production in Nigeria.
CBiIL will provide its support to 850 000 small-scale maize farmers, who will all be integrated into agricultural value chains.
According to Pedro Guerreiro, SAP Central Africa Managing Director, this kind of support to Nigeria’s farmers will add to the country’s food security.
Guerreiro added that by equipping farmers with the information they need and connecting them to suppliers and buyers would greatly improve productivity and output.
The SAP Rural Sourcing Management solution offers a mobile-based app that improves how managers track and collect data about farms, the crops planted, and their sales.
The program launched in 2017 after a pilot program involving the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and has been used by several governments across Africa.
CBiIL has also partnered with Nestle Nigeria to help young agripreneurs in the farming sector to access new opportunities as well as to accelerate farmers’ adoption of helpful technology.
According to Cathy Smith, the MD SAP Africa, the project marks SAP Africa’s dedication toward helping African governments achieve the first two of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: No Poverty and Zero Hunger.
