Egypt edtech Orcas raises a $2.1M pre-series A to expand across MENAP

Orcas is an Egypt live learning edtech looking to unlock digital live learning capabilities for both schools and teachers offline and online across KSA, Egypt, and Pakistan (MENAP). The company has raised $2.1 million pre-series A round co-led by CIRA’s NFX Ventures and Access Bridge Ventures. Other participants in the round are Launch Africa Ventures, Algebra Ventures, Seedstars International, and Cairo Angels Syndicate Fund.

Through its platform Orcas runs a discovery channel for both parents to find tutors and other hybrid courses. This hybrid learning experience offers personalized learning plans, learning assessments, and practical assignments for learners to guarantee tailored learning experiences possible for empowering tutors to provide top-quality learning sessions.

In the press release Hossam Taher, CEO of Orcas disclosed that the funding will go towards building the technology product, attracting the best talent, and expanding into new geographies in MENAP.

This is the first investment by the Cairo Angels Syndicate Fund which announced its first close in December 2021. The micro-venture syndicate fund invests in early-stage startups of ticket sizes between $100,000 and $250,000 across the UAE, Egypt, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and South Africa. In part of his comments shared in the press release Aly El Shalakany, the CEO of the Cairo Angels Syndicate Fund said, “We are very proud of Orcas’ performance so far and we are confident that with this latest investment they will continue to be market leaders within the space.”

Orcas was co-founded in 2019 by Hossam Taher and Amira El Gharib and provides K-12 students with live and in-person 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. Through flexible payments plans, discounted packages, and instalment programs Orcas offers an affordable high quality learning platform helping parents support the education of their children.

Orcas platform offers self-paced learning environments that complement the learning experience. This is offered through gamified and free question banks mapped to various learning systems and student ages. Users get free access to high-quality academic exercises developed by the Orcas Education Department. In early 2022 Orcas will start operations in Lahore, Pakistan.
