Equinix, a data center corporation based in the United States, has announced a $160 million investment to build its first data center in South Africa as part of its African expansion strategy, following its $320 million acquisition of Nigeria’s MainOne in December 2021.
A report by Arizton says that South Africa is the best market for data centers in Africa. By 2027, $3.2 million will have been invested, and the market will grow at a CAGR of 11.15 percent from 2022 to 2027.
Equinix started doing business in Chile and Peru at the beginning of March after buying four data centers from Empresa Nacional De Telecomunicaciones S.A. (“Entel”), a major Chilean telecommunications company, for a total of $705 million.
The company also has a presence in India. In August 2020, it paid $161 million to buy the India operations of GPX Global Systems.
