Ethiopian startup Dodai brings innovative solutions to urban transportation challenges through its electric vehicle manufacturing initiative. The company, whose Japanese name translates to “foundation,” focuses on designing and assembling electric motorcycles, three-wheelers, and bicycles for the Ethiopian market.
Founder and CEO Yuma Sasaki identified Ethiopia’s potential for sustainable transportation, citing its population of over 120 million, abundant renewable energy resources, and growing urban centers. Drawing from his experience in Japan’s renewable energy and e-mobility sectors, Sasaki established Dodai in 2021 to provide affordable transportation solutions across Ethiopia.
The company distinguishes itself as Ethiopia’s exclusive provider of lithium battery-powered motorbikes. These vehicles offer superior performance and longevity, lasting eight times longer than competing electric motorbikes in the market. This durability translates to reduced maintenance costs and enhanced value for users.
Dodai’s manufacturing capacity currently reaches 200 units monthly, with plans to expand to 1,500 units. The company prices its motorcycles at 150,000 Ethiopian birr (US$1,170) and partners with VisionFund, Ethiopia’s microfinance institution, to offer monthly payment plans starting at 8,000 birr (US$62.50).
The company’s expansion plans include launching 300 battery-swapping stations over three years in partnership with the Ethiopian government. This infrastructure will enable riders to exchange depleted batteries for charged ones, minimizing service interruptions and enhancing the practicality of electric mobility.
Ethiopia’s electric vehicle market shows significant growth potential, with over 100,000 EVs currently operating in the country. Government projections anticipate this number quadrupling by 2032, creating opportunities for early market entrants like Dodai. The company’s initiatives align with broader efforts to address urban congestion and reduce carbon emissions in African cities.
The development of sustainable transportation solutions becomes increasingly crucial as African cities face growing mobility challenges and environmental concerns. Dodai’s approach combines technological innovation with practical solutions to meet Ethiopia’s transportation needs while supporting environmental sustainability.
