EU launches the Horizon Europe programme with a focus on anglophone Africa

The European Union (EU) has unveiled Horizon Europe, a programme funding research and innovation initiative across Anglophone Africa. This announcement was shared during a virtual event hosted by South Africa’s Department of Science and Innovation. Dubbed as the “Africa Initiative”, the program runs under the Horizon Europe has a €350 million budget.

The EU revealed that the Horizon Europe 2021-2022 work programme covers 36 topics and calls for proposals relevant to the African continent and focuses on innovation, public health, and scientific capacity. African researchers and innovators can then tap into a €350 million fund offering locally adopted solutions towards life challenges.

Horizon Europe is the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme that availed funding between 2014 and 2020 and centered on research and innovation. This emphasis was based on science, industrial leadership, and tackling societal challenges. The programme runs on a €95.5 billion budget for the next 7 years.
