The 4th Annual Sports Betting East Africa Summit that took place in Johannesburg South Africa was a success. The summit recorded the attendance of more than 250 both African and International delegates. The discussions during the summit revolved around the latest business opportunities. They also discussed technologies and regulations across East Africa. The discussions become heated at the time when regulators and operators put up the issue of implementation of hardware legislation and software monitoring in Uganda.
Operators called for tolerance from regulators in the coming months. This was to allow technology, operators, and software providers humble time for transition. There was a common agreement that the event was the best opportunity to learn from one another. This was especially when the top regulatory groups from East Africa come together to talk about the future of the region’s regulators. They also agreed that the summit offers a great opportunity to open up communication channels between Malawi, Uganda, Mozambique, and Mauritius.
The talks about the 2018 World Cup in Russia took a different direction than expected. Operators came to an agreement that business during that period will not be easy. The main issue that came out from that talk was that Ugandans and Kenyans only support their own national teams in case they participate in the tournament. Most of the people from East Africa support the English Premier League. The summit organizers Eventus International thanks all those who made the summit a success. It thanks the National Gaming Board of Uganda for the strong support they showed towards the summit.

The Summit gave chance to East African startups to pitch their innovation to the outside world of iGaming. This took place at the Sports Betting East Africa Summit Business Startup Competition. Edadcoinbox, Kola Studios, and Chekiodds all received 10 minutes each to pitch their ideas to the leading businessmen in the iGaming industry. The businessmen included Nelson Mugisha Mulera (Airtel Uganda), Jeff Halloran (Sahara Games), and Salvation Alibor (Syscomptech)
ChekiOdds displayed their new odds centralizing the affiliate programs. Judges and audience were impressed by marketing plan displayed by Mr. Dev Karia. But he did not win since he was not looking for investment opportunities. He was hunting to get a strategic collaboration with East African operators. The price was won by Kola Studios’ Daniel Okolany. He won the price because of many reasons one of them being that he was seeking for both partnership and investment. Another one is that his idea of coming up with digitalized locals cards like Karata and Matatu was received well by both the judges and audience. Lastly, he already owns a huge mobile online play across Kenya and Uganda. Daniel realized that various software providers who attended the summit showed interest in porting his games into their personal platform and become regional distributors. Another successful firm during the event was Table Talk Kampala. On 9th April 2018 20 operators of the sectors’ regulators had an informal discussion on the ethics I the gaming sector. The discussion was led by Christina Thakor Rankin.
