GE Power and FieldCore Revive Metahara Sugar Factory in Ethiopia

Metahara Sugar Factory in Ethiopia was restarted by GE Power and FieldCore. The initiative was carried out seven months later after terrible damage by thunderstorm. The recovery process took only 20 days to set the entire plant. The objectives of the factory comprise of the revival of 5000 employment opportunities and solving Ethiopian sugar shortages for more than 100 million.

According to the Mr. Fahmi Dawud, Metahara’s Deputy Factory Manager, people had already lost hope in the operation of the factory due to severe damage. It is a great honor to see the factory functioning again since supermarkets and other shopping stores had run out sugar for long. The General Manager, GE’s Power Services, Elisee Sezan noted that is a solemn achievement resolved sugar challenges in the country.  The accomplishment marks the level of commitment and concern of the startup to the need of the customers in Ethiopia.

Oromiya Regional State which is about 200 kilometers away from the capital city hosts the Metahara Sugar Factory. Production capacity stands at 136,000 tons and above yearly which signifies almost twenty percent of sugar consumption in Ethiopia up to date. Executive Country Business Leader for GE’s Global Growth Organization, Daniel Hailu also explained that sugar is a basic commodity in the country for domestic consumption and export. He emphasized that the company is humble to economical contribute foreign currencies into the country via sugar exports.

Based on its operations, the factory works closely with the government authorities, private sectors, and the others.  The project is expected to facilitate economic growth through infrastructure development mainly in healthcare, transport or aviation technology. The GE 60-capacity permanent office was open by the factory in 2016. The program is situated in Addis Ababa with nearly 40 fulltime employees composed of about ninety percent of the local residents.
