Google has introduced the “Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First” program, which aims to assist African startups seeking to address local challenges through artificial intelligence. This initiative acknowledges the significant impact of AI on a global scale, revolutionizing various industries and expanding the boundaries of what’s achievable.
The initiative also emphasizes the notable contributions made by African startups in tackling crucial regional issues using AI technology. The “AI First” program is designed to offer support to startups interested in exploring the potential of AI.
It takes insights from previous efforts like the Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa, the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund, and the Google for Startups Accelerator: Women Founders. The core objective remains unchanged: to endorse and aid solutions driven by Africa.
Applications are currently being accepted for the 10-week equity-free accelerator, targeting startups up to the series A stage in Africa or crafting AI and machine learning solutions centred around Africa.
Benefits of participation
Participants will receive:
- Access to Google’s AI expertise
- Technical resources, including up to $350,000 in Google Cloud Credits
- Mentorship from seasoned AI professionals
- Invaluable networking opportunities
Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa, commented on the initiative: “Africa’s tech landscape is dynamic and constantly progressing. Witnessing African startups utilize AI to tackle our distinct challenges and establish global standards is truly motivating. ‘AI First’ goes beyond being just a program; it stands as proof of our confidence in the vision of these startups, guaranteeing they receive the necessary support and direction to actualize their complete potential.”
Since its establishment in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa initiative has assisted 106 startups from 17 African nations. These startups have collectively secured over $263 million in funding and generated over 2,800 direct job opportunities within the region.
