Google to Double Google Drive Subscription Price for Nigerian Users Amid Rising Costs

In a move affecting Nigerian users, Google will increase the monthly subscription fee for its 100GB Google Drive storage plan from ₦950 Naira to ₦1,900 Naira. The new pricing will take effect on March 28, 2025.

In a notification to its customers, Google stated, “The price will automatically increase to ₦1,900/month on 28 Mar 2025 for your Google One subscription. Cancel at any time in Google Play.”

Google had previously announced a price increase, effective February 18, 2025, in select countries, including Nigeria. Other affected African countries include Egypt, Ghana, and the United Republic of Tanzania.

Google One is a service that offers users cloud storage for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. This price hike, which doubles the current cost, comes at a time when digital storage has become essential for both personal and professional use. Users who rely on Google Drive for backing up documents, photos, and other files may need to reassess their storage needs and adjust their budgets accordingly.

While Google has not provided specific reasons for the price hike, factors such as increased operational costs and fluctuations in currency exchange rates may have played a role in the decision. This price increase comes amidst a broader trend of rising costs in Nigeria, where businesses are adjusting prices in response to inflation.

In January, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff increase for telecom operators in Nigeria, which market leaders MTN and Airtel have already implemented. Similarly, pay TV provider Multichoice raised the prices of DSTV and GOtv plans by up to 21%.

Nigerian users are advised to review their current usage and consider adjusting their storage strategies ahead of the March 28, 2025, implementation date.
