A recent report by Zijin and Nkwe Platinum revealed they’ve partnered with MTN and Huawei to develop the first smart metal mine that uses 5G technology in the Southern Africa region.

Since its founding more than two decades ago, Zijin Mining Group has primarily emphasized incorporating scientific and technological advancements into its operations. It is one of the handful of global mining firms equipped with engineering management capabilities, autonomous system technology, scientific practice and research platforms.

We launched Zijin Garatau Platinum Mine in May last year with a promise to develop into an operation that adheres to the most up-to-date technological standards, as well as rigorous health and safety. Implementing the 5G smart mining solution would undoubtedly make it possible for the Zijin Mining Group to fulfil its obligation and consolidate the mine’s position as a technology-led player in the global mining industry.

The extraction of metal ores has been a tedious process that requires a high level of expertise. As a result, the Zijin Group considers “intelligence and informatization” to be essential strategic directions and actively pursues technical solutions that could increase process automation and safety as well as the advantages associated with mining.

One of the most important projects this Mining Group is working on outside of China is the Zijin Garatau Platinum Mine, which is located in South Africa. The Zijin Mining Group will be able to construct its first safe overseas and high-tech smart mine, which will be rich in social and economic value, with the assistance of Huawei and MTN, thanks to the collaboration that has been established between the three companies. In addition to this, we are going to put in a lot of effort to encourage the sustainable growth of Africa.

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Nkwe Platinum Smart, Fan Zhiyu, said Mining is still a popular topic of conversation in South Africa. MTN Business is proud to be a leader in this field by utilizing our best-in-class systems and network to support the expansion and longevity of our corporate customers’ businesses. The advent of 5G technology will indeed be a game-changing innovation that will revolutionize traditional mining procedures.

Over the past five years, we have put more than R50 billion into expanding and improving our network. Because of this investment, MTN is now in a stronger position to provide its clients with faster, cutting edge, and smoother connectivity. All parties participating in the cooperation will be able to take full advantage of our most advanced network.

According to Peng Song, Pres. Huawei Global Carrier Marketing and Solution, “5G has unquestionably accelerated the trend of digitalization, which is now a global trend all over a variety of different businesses.”The prospect of opening the premier 5G metals smart mine in Southern Africa alongside Zijin and MTN fills us with great excitement.

As we speak, Huawei is in the process of introducing information and communications technology solutions based on 5G to the mining sector. At the same time, the company is building an ecosystem that spans multiple industries to continuously improve network connectivity to assist telcos in maximizing network value. Additionally, Huawei is helping the mining firm in constructing safe and intelligent mining projects by utilizing the abilities of 5GtoB.
