Huawei-backed ICT competition launched in Ethiopia

Chinese multinational giant Huawei will fund the 6th Global ICT Competition in Ethiopia. The competition will showcase the brightest and most innovative ideas by 1000 student participants. The Ethiopian Herald reported that the national final winners will represent Ethiopia in the Global Final 2022 to be held in China.

According to the statement, this competition will offer practical and innovative tracks. The practical aspects request for a comprehensive theoretical understanding and hands-on ability while the latter mainly focuses on innovative technological applications and design capabilities.

Winners will receive Huawei prizes such as tablets, sports wearables, and mobile phones. The top winner emerging from each track will represent Ethiopia at the regional final before competing for the global final to be held in China.

Ji Hui, Regional VP at Huawei Ethiopia described the launch as the “dawn of a digital revolution”. He also shared Huawei’s intention to “align with Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy”.

The Huawei Competition is based on Huawei products and technology while competing for knowledge and innovation in ICT. The competition has thus far attracted over 350,000 students drawn from 2000 universities since 2015.

Despite Covid-19 challenges, the 6th Huawei competition will bring together over 170,000 students who will team up in 130 groups after acing their national and regional competitions.
