TechInAfrica – According to the leading vendor-neutral provider of cloud infrastructure, Routed, the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) in Africa is considered as an emerging opportunity on the continent while the implementation already started in South Africa. As a result, there is a growing demand for the IaaS as well as for cloud computing service.
Andrew Cruise, the Managing Director at Routed explained: “Since launching three years ago, we have seen a steady increase in both interest and deployment of cloud infrastructure services. As cloud computing grows, so too does the need for cloud-based infrastructure resources.”
“Without IaaS there is no Cloud—IaaS is the foundation for all Cloud services. Now that connectivity is fast, cheap and reliable we have reached the tipping point in South Africa where general interest in Cloud has switched into action.”
Xalam’s Rise of Cloud Report 2019 shows that South Africa is the biggest cloud market in Africa, accounting for 75% of the continent’s total cloud revenue. This is not surprising as around 60% of Africa’s enterprise ICT services revenues are generated in the country.
As one that featured on the report, Routed explained that IaaS is one of the fastest-growing categories in the continent’s cloud space. It is averaging around 120% annually for over the three years at 2018.
The report made a prediction that around 80% of Africa’s public revenue is generated from the SaaS application. Xalam said that this is a reflection of SaaS as the cloud starting platform for most businesses.
Xalam Analytics’ Managing Director, Guy Zibi, said that IaaS is a long-term player and estimated that Africa is a bit late away from a true boom. He said, “From a low base – IaaS is the fastest-growing cloud services segment across our cloud value chain.”
The growth and potential of IaaS in the country are said to be the VMWare factor—VMWare virtualization solutions that provide African MSPs with a platform to compete with hyper-scale providers on IaaS. The MSPs has been able to offer IaaS service locally which cannot be supported and offered by global cloud providers.
“For more than a decade, VMware’s solutions have been the go-to virtualization and management platform for enterprises requiring uptime, security and performance on-premise. Now enterprises can be reassured that the same outcome can be delivered using specialist, certified VMware Cloud Providers, without internalizing risk, or investing in facilities, hardware, software, and engineering resources,” Cruise concluded.
