TechInAfrica – Intelsat S.A and Africa Mobile Networks (AMN) have partnered to increase mobile connectivity to underserved communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. For the record, the partnership between two companies first announced in 2018. Since the announcement which is less than a year ago, 525 remote cell sites have been connected. By the end of 2019, they plan to expand the mobile coverage to other parts of the region.
“As both a global corporation and a global citizen, Intelsat is committed to investing in accelerating the adoption of mobile connectivity in sub-Saharan Africa and throughout the world and closing the digital divide,” said Jean-Philippe Gillet, Vice President and General Manager at Intelsat.
Gillet added, “Through this partnership, we are now providing access to mobile coverage for the first time to approximately 1.7 million people living in remote communities across several countries that many thoughts were impossible to connect.”
The expansion cost and geographic complexities are the two biggest challenges in establishing connectivity in most remote rural areas of Arica. Due to these challenges, AMN has developed a low-cost solution—using small cell solar-based system that can be deployed in less than six hours. This solution is combined with Intelsat EpicNG satellites and the 23 additional satellites that cover the African continent. Through these tech solutions, both Intelsat and AMN deliver a fast, cost-effective, and reliable mobile network infrastructure.
Michael Darcy, AMN’s CEO, said: “Intelsat shares our vision of installing a cell site in every African village. Like us, they recognize that when you close the connectivity gap in sub-Saharan Africa, you can bring about significant positive change in people’s lives. Using Intelsat’s technology, our two companies can make that vision a reality.”
