Iran is planning to deepen ties with Kenya by setting up a common innovation center to act as a platform for exchanging ideas. The Iran House of Innovation and Technology will unveil in Kilimani, to offer workspaces and internet connections for both Kenyan and Iranian companies.

Jafar Barmaki, the Iranian ambassador to Kenya, described this center as the “first-of-its-kind” and the biggest in the world. The center aims at transferring technology it has acquired over the years. A team of 40 Iran-based knowledge firms in the fields of renewable energy, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, nanotechnology, and biotechnology will tour IHIT center next week.

This delegation was led by Sorena Sattari, the Iranian VP for Science and Technology who has scheduled a meet with the Kenyan Business Community for a joint business forum aimed at strengthening relations between the two nations.

Such B2B meetings give Kenyan companies an opportunity to interact and network with Iranian companies. The idea is to secure partnerships and strengthen relations. Dr. Barmaki described Kenya as a “friendly country” with the right infrastructure for one to reach other countries in the region.

Trade between Kenya and Iran is skewed in favor of the Middle Eastern country. 2019 official estimates point to import figures at Sh10.4 billion against the Sh2.12 billion goods Kenya exported during the same period.
