South African agri-tech startup Khula has successfully secured ZAR126 million (approximately US$6.8 million) in the initial phase of its Series A funding round. This investment is set to enhance Khula’s digital platform, which aims to transform the agricultural supply chain by directly linking farmers with buyers.

Founded in 2018, Khula provides a robust digital ecosystem designed to address key challenges within the agricultural value chain. The platform consists of three core components:

  • Fresh Produce Marketplace: Facilitates direct connections between farmers and buyers, improving market access.
  • Inputs Marketplace: Enables farmers to purchase essential supplies, including seeds, fertilizers, and equipment, from verified suppliers.
  • Funder Dashboard: Simplifies access to financing, helping farmers secure the capital needed to expand their operations.

Since its pilot phase with around 400 farmers, Khula has experienced substantial growth, now serving over 7,000 active users and offering a diverse catalog of more than 5,000 agricultural products.

The latest funding round drew investments from major players, including South Africa’s Absa Bank, PepsiCo’s Kgodiso Fund, AECI, and E Squared. Absa Bank, a key financial supporter of the agricultural sector in South Africa, highlighted that this investment aligns with its commitment to backing digital solutions that drive efficiency and productivity in the industry.

With this fresh capital, Khula aims to scale its operations, grow its user base, and strengthen its digital infrastructure. Additionally, the startup plans to extend the Series A funding round later this year to leverage the rising demand for its services.

Khula’s innovative approach and rapid expansion highlight the transformative power of technology-driven solutions in revolutionizing agriculture, enhancing food security, and increasing efficiency across South Africa’s farming sector.
