TechInAfrica – Through the Prime Minister, Honorable Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Mauritius has launched a mobile payment solution which is claimed to be the first in the Indian Ocean island nations. The launching took place in the capital city, Port Louis.
The mobile payment solution is called Mauritius Telecom’s my.t money, provided by PCCW Global, Hong Kong’s premier telecommunications provider. The payment solution is based on Tap and Go, which is a proven mobile solution in Hong Kong.
The mobile payment solution aims to eliminate the digital divide by facilitating payment and non-payment transactions through a platform. It offers a rich digital experience that traditional payment services cannot provide. The platform can integrate key aspects of a cashless community, such as education, commerce and finance, transportation, and government social welfare initiatives.
Furthermore, the solution is able to reach out to the unbanked population so that they can have access to financial services and applications running on both older and modern type of phones.
Speaking on the company’s vision on launching the new mobile payment solution, Mauritius Telecom’s CEO, Sherry Singh, said: “In terms of vision and ambition, Mauritius Telecom is not just launching another service. We intend to positively disrupt the payments industry. my.t money seeks to make payment fast, simple and fun. 200,000 customers have already signed up and at launch, we already have 1,000 merchants and more than 200 loyalty partners.”
The launching of my.t money was assisted by PCCW Global which also took part in the development of the mobile money solution. The assistance during the development process was to make sure the service runs smoothly and efficiently.
my.t money mobile solution is cloud-based with local hosting for sensitive customer data. On the other hand, mobile apps and the payment engine can be both localized or delivered internationally.
Commenting on the launching of the mobile payment solution, CEO of PCCW Global, Marc Halbfinger, said: “When combined with a high-speed, robust and secure global network, our FinTech experience in Hong Kong places us in an ideal position to work with ICT service providers in rolling out cutting-edge mobile payment solutions anywhere in the world. It is exciting to think of all the new possibilities and opportunities this service can bring to a connected world.”
