Microsoft index ranking used four key domains of sexual, reputational, Intrusive contact and behavioral. Some other minor ranking parameters were derived from revenge porn, discrimination and cyberbullying.
The Cape Town 2017 Microsoft Digital Civility Index report for 23 countries was aimed at examining negative online interactions among countries.
According to the report, out of the 23 countries, South Africa was ranked position 22 signifying extreme negative online behavior. Besides, the report indicated that the global intrusive was 56%, behavioral 39%, sexual 31% and finally reputation at 18%. South Africa, on the other hand, had the following results; sexual 39%, intrusive 71% reputation 23 and behavioral 47%. Moreover, the report revealed that the global unwanted sex message was 21% while South Africa led by 27%. Respondents had also experienced 89% online nastiness from people best known to them. Respondents emphasized that online abuse suffering 26% while suicide thoughts 13%.
The Microsoft index results of 2017was sourced from teenagers and adults aged 13 -17 and 18-74 years respectively based on interviews.
