MTN has launched MoMo International Airtime allowing users to buy airtime for recipients in other countries. This applies to foreign nationals residing in South Africa, not forgetting the South Africans with family and friends overseas. Registered MoMo users enter *151# to access the services and charges will be done via the South Africa Rand.

MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) gives its users access to services on the MoMo App or MoMo USSD menu. The service is open to anyone, whether an MTN customer or not. As one buys airtime on MTN they will notice a third option – Global Airtime. You can then pick the country in which the recipient resides and it will show all the mobile operators available. From there you can go ahead and pick the correct network.

Among the countries listed are Bangladesh, Burundi, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ethiopia, Senegal, Nigeria, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the start of the month, MTN SA announced that the MoMo platform was on the verge of hitting 2 million users surpassing their year target of 1 million. The service was originally launched in 2012 and later decommissioned in 2016 before its relaunch in February this year.
