TechInAfrica – Held virtually, the annual MTN Business App of the Year Awards announced winners in 10 categories.
“Since its inception, the MTN Business App of the Year Awards has remained a highlight on the annual ICT calendar. It has unleashed apps that are now household names and provide services to millions of South Africans. They have impacted positively on virtually all aspects of life from financial services, to healthcare and education,” said Head of Marketing at MTN SA Business, Kholo Magagane.
The startup EasyEquities came first in all categories, including the Best Consumer Solution for its ease of use and its investment feature. It won a grand prize for a tech-related trip worth R200 000.
Here are the winners from each category, which received a share of an R100 000 prize pool:
Best Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics): Examsta
The learning platform uses the gamification element when delving into Geography and Life Sciences Subject that is adjusted to SA’s national curriculum and IEB curriculum.
Best Enterprise Solution: Checkers Sixty60
An online shopping app with swift speed and convenience, allowing a team of in-store shoppers to scan products to complete customer’s orders and can receive up to thousands of orders every day.
Best Incubated Solution: Technishen
A mobile technician service that utilizes geo-location to find a supplier within a 10 Km radius, requesting support from IT, electrical installation and maintenance, auto mechanics, or plumbing services.
Most Innovative Solution: BirdPro
Bird species identifier for over 6,500 birds and more than 1,700 clear bird calls available in all SA languages, German, French, and Portuguese.
Best Health Solution: Lexie Hearing
The app assists users of Bluetooth Lexie hearing aid on customizing their hearing preference through a 2-minute clinically hearing check setup.
Best Gaming Solution: League of Legends Augmented Rift
This augmented reality game is tailored for turn-based and player vs.player lovers that feature vivid animation and challenging puzzles to solve.
Best Agricultural Solution: GreenFingers Mobile
The app manages the finance of smallholder farmers in different value chains and farmer data collection, as well as equipped with a reforestation tracking tool to support farmers and funders in direct outcome-based reforestation projects.
Best Educational Solution: Xitsonga Dictionary
A digital dictionary that translates from Xitsonga to English with picture mode.
Best Financial Solution: StokFella
A management app for tracking stokvel or informal savings and loans clubs activities.
Best ‘South African’ App: Bottles
Bottles expand its role as a delivery grocery item along with its alcoholic beverages delivery.
Other winners announced came from Mtn Business App Academy Awards, which are Matric Live for Best Breakthrough Solution and Guardian Health for Best Youth App. The Award is a 6-week coding training followed by a 72-hour hackathon.
Checkers Sixty60 won the People’s Choice Award.
