TechInAfrica – As technology grows at an unprecedented rate, so does the opportunity reserved for criminals lurking behind the anonymity within hundreds of lines of code; primarily targeting your data for numerous illicit purposes. Cyberspace is as vast as it is dangerous, and users would be regarded as more than wise to protect themselves from the dangers which could potentially jeopardize them—and their surroundings.
To prevent further crimes from happening, the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) have cooked up methods in order to protect citizens of the digital age against criminal elements. Such codes of practice are expected to manifest via various network service providers of the country, which in return could potentially benefit both sides of the party.
Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, admitted that this initiative was deemed necessary because of the rise of internet crimes—not just in Nigeria, but globally in general. Danbatta also spoke—through Ismail Adedigba, his representation—that the code is a regulatory intervention protection to shield the country’s internet users against imminent threats of cyber-attacks, as well as additional yet mandatory services like child protection, data privacy, and other subjects regarding online security.
Danbatta also asserted that albeit it is practically impossible to eradicate cyber crimes in general, telecom providers must also play a role in order to combat and mitigate the effects of cyber crimes. Public education regarding the matter could also serve as a pillar in order for them to not fall into the hands of cyber culprits. “If people are informed, they will know how to protect themselves,” Danbatta emphasized.
This initiative is implemented with hopes that people will finally be aware about the threats of cyber crime, which in return could lead to them increasing the security measures on their emails, their phones, or any of their connected platforms and devices for that matter.
