TechInAfrica – A set of multimedia courses has just launched in the market, which is catered to business professionals on overcoming challenges in the workforce, called the Wicked Problem-Solving® course.

It is developed in a partnership between Project Management Institute (PMI) and technology pioneer and entrepreneur Tom Wujec, who had frequent the stage as a TED speaker.

The course is a learning tool for businesses to build essential problem solving skills when encountering the complex challenges found in the industry. The name is based on a term coined by two design theorists Horst RIttel and Melvin Webber, who refer the word wicked to a specific type of problem that are impossible to solve with traditional methods due to their inherent complexity and uncertainty.

“By incorporating Wicked Problem-Solving into our portfolio of tools and resources, PMI continues to provide innovative ways to deliver value and solve problems,” says PMI business development leader for Africa, George Asamani.

“Wicked Problem-Solving incorporates the best of design thinking, agile, lean, project management and other modern ways of working. This revolutionary approach will help professionals, teams and entire organisations to think creatively and navigate increasingly complex change.”

“Wicked Problem-Solving is more than a course – it’s a simple, but revolutionary approach that redefines how we frame and resolve challenges, as well as how we can bring out the best in our teams,” says Tom Wujec.

“Wicked Problem-Solving helps people organise their work into time-bound courses of action called plays. Each play produces a clear visual model that can foster clarity, generate new points of view, explore alternatives and forge winning solutions. Designing and running better plays elevates a team with qualities the world needs now: the ability to comprehend and adapt quickly, to navigate complexity, and to bring more imagination and energy to their work.”

The program is consisted of 20 main videos that delves into the core principle and practical techniques of the problem solving style, a dynamic workbook that demonstrate the technique, a playbook that shows the degree of challenges, from simple to complex, and three digital decks that act as a guidance, consisting of principles that set the course of actions on dealing with a challenge, and interactive exercise on digital whiteboard to be done alone or in team.

The learning curve does not just end after the course completion. Learners will have to solve more nuanced challenges, in which they will try to untangle with Wujec’s guidance. They can include their achievements on their portfolio and a digital badge which they can share on their social media profiles and resumes.
