TechInAfrica – The Digital Lab Africa (DLA) Online Pitch Competition will select 30 African creatives who will pitch their solutions. The selection is based on public voting and opened until April 28, 2019.
DLA is an incubation platform for African creatives in the digital content established in 2016. It is initiated by the Embassy of France and the French Institute in South Africa (IFAS) and managed by Wits University’s Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct since 2018.
In this year’s edition, it’s a fully-fledged program of the Digital Content Hub of Tshimologong supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
The Digital Lab Africa—DLA #3—call for projects closed on January 31. There were around 5,000 entries from more than 30 Sub-Saharan African countries such as Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Senegal, and Zimbabwe. Out of these countries, 30 finalists that represent the new talent generation in the creative industries like virtual reality, digital music, web creation, as well as the video game and animation, were selected to compete in the DLA Online Pitch Competition.
According to Lesley Williams, CEO of Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and Director of Digital Lab Africa, the contributions from talented content creators in the creative industry will bring benefit to the continent.
“We would like to thank all the candidates who applied for the DLA call for projects. We recognize the importance of taking ownership of the narrative in our own stories and we’re delighted that so many candidates stepped up to the plate,” said Williams.
For those who want to vote for their favorite video pitch, they can do it by visiting www.vote.digilabafrica.com. The online platform is developed by Zakhele Technologies, a Tsimologong-based IT company. For projects that get most votes will be awarded the DLA Audience Award and invited to a prestigious DLA industry event held in France or in the Sub-Saharan African region.
The 10 winners will be selected by the DLA Selection Committees and announced on April 30. Each of the winners will get a cash prize of R42,000 and a tailor-made incubation program to accelerate their projects with mentors from Sub-Saharan and Sub-Saharan creative industries.
