TechInAfrica – South African Agri-Tech startup based in Cape Town, Bulrush Agritech, has received R250K investment after taking part in Akro Accelerator earlier this year. The startup develops an online platform called The Stockman allowing livestock farmers to track their rainfall, stock numbers, and herd movements.
Bulrush Agritech was founded in January 2019 by husband and wife, Sean and Kristi Rennie. Sean is a software developer while Kristi has a background in UX design and brand-building experiences. Together they started to develop their startup.
According to Ventureburn, both of them did not want to mention who the angel investor was. However, they said that the investment was received during their participation in the acceleration program based in Cape Town earlier this year.
“The investor is a South African investor, based in Joburg (Johannesburg). He has close ties to the SA SME Fund (which is sponsoring Akro Accelerator’s two cohorts run this year) and a broad range of personal investments across a number of industries. He really has a personal belief in the necessity of regenerative agriculture to address food security in Africa,” said Kristi, giving a clue about the investor who injected an R250K investment in their startup.
Kristi explained the idea behind the startup she and her husband founded. She said it came from her father-in-law, Mike, who switched to more regenerative farming methodologies using manual calculation and automatic features.
Speaking on the platform they have developed, Kristi said that it will soon be able to calculate a farm’s stocking rate and track the farm’s stocking rate with its carrying capacity.
“This will enable farmers to make better grazing decisions to prevent overgrazing as well as undergrazing their land, both barriers to maximizing their farm’s potential.”
Akro Accelerator in which the startup has participated in, already closed its second cohort last August. The program will start off on Monday, September 9th, 2019.
