Ukheshe, the South Africa fintech payments startup, has emerged second at the first KPMG Private Enterprise Global Tech Innovator Africa Competition. The challenge identifies the fastest and most competitive tech companies in Africa. First place was won by Khula, and third place went to Humanz.
Ukheshe took 2nd place against 75 other entrants. The company runs a locally developed universal API that has onboarded several telcos, banks, fintechs, merchants, apps, you name it. Africa has witnessed a year-on-year explosion in fintech investment. Briter Bridges, data shows that the African fintech industry received 31% ($407 million) of all investment deployed to the continent in 2020.
A majority of the unicorns across Africa are fintechs, most of which have significantly scaled across their regions. Ukheshe’s platform helps telcos and banks provide digital-first banking and payment services. Ukheshe was also chosen as a Mastercard start path program partner.
