Safaricom Launches Second Phase of Spark Accelerator to Support Early-Stage Startups in Kenya

Safaricom, in partnership with M-PESA Africa and Sumitomo Corporation, has announced the launch of applications for the second phase of the Spark Accelerator.

This program is designed to assist early-stage startups in Kenya by offering resources, mentorship, and access to markets and funding.

The Spark Accelerator Programme is aimed at propelling early-stage startups to expand and scale their operations. It provides participants with various benefits, including access to product and technology support such as Daraja and M-PESA Open APIs, AWS Activate credits of up to $25,000, technical advice, and business development assistance. Additionally, startups will have the opportunity to tap into Safaricom’s customer base of over 30 million, attend networking events, and access potential funding from Safaricom and prominent venture capital funds.

Safaricom’s CEO, Dr. Peter Ndegwa, highlighted the company’s dedication to promoting innovation:

“At Safaricom, we believe technology is a catalyst for change and solutions, and that’s why we incentivize and support innovative startups with the tools they need to reach the next level. Through the Spark Accelerator Programme, we are investing in our future leaders and contributing to substantial societal transformation and economic progress.”

The program is open to startups in Kenya, particularly those developing solutions in sectors like embedded financial services, content, and related industries. Applicants should have an existing product, be post-revenue, and exhibit strong growth potential. Teams with diverse leadership, particularly those with female founders or leaders, are strongly encouraged to apply.

This second phase follows the success of the first cohort, which recently participated in an investor demo day where they showcased their innovations to potential investors. The event underscored the programme’s role in nurturing startups and fostering connections within the investment ecosystem.

Applications will be accepted from April 1 to May 15, 2025.

Startups interested in applying for the Spark Accelerator Programme can find more information and submit their applications through the official website.
