Solarbox,a Senegal-based startup operating at the crossroads of renewable energy and electric mobility, has secured $1 million in pre-seed funding. This investment is set to drive the development of its innovative solar-powered e-mobility solutions within Senegal and support its expansion into other regions across West Africa.
Founded in 2022 by Tijan Watt, Solarbox’s flagship product range features solar-charged electric two and three-wheelers. These vehicles are designed to reduce reliance on conventional charging infrastructure while significantly lowering carbon emissions. The pre-seed funding round was led by a consortium of angel investors and venture capital firms, including Digital Energy Facility, Launch Africa Ventures, JLL Foundation, and Teranga Capital, all of which focus on renewable energy and sustainable technology.
The $1 million raised will be channelled into research and development, enhancing scaling capabilities, and broadening the company’s footprint in key urban markets. “Instead of importing millions of tonnes of petroleum annually, Senegal can harness its abundant sunlight. With transportation accounting for 40% of energy needs, solar-powered mobility offers a transformative opportunity,” Tijan stated.
