South Atlantic Cable System is the first undersea fiber cable providing internet connection between continents across the sea. Brazil hosts SACs which connects Africa and South America continents. The initial installation of the system took place on 23rd February 2018 in Fortaleza, Brazil. However, the system will officially begin to operate from September 2018 after completion of the first phase.
The estimated initial capacity is 40 Tbps. Therefore, the system will aid in the internet connectivity between the two continents as well as other countries in the US.
The Angola cable reduces latency by 5 folds from 350 milliseconds to just 60miliseconds.
Currently, there are minimum challenges pertaining internet traffic between South America Africa, Angola government owns 51 % of its cables alongside WACS and Monet which connects Europe and North America.
The undersea cables linking South Africa and the rest of the world are ACE, WACS, EASS and Seacom. The initial capacity for the major cables constitutes of Seacom – 12 Tbps, ACE – 5 Tbps, WACS – 14.5Tbps and Seacom – 12 Tbps.
