The Australian Government is enhancing Africa’s capacity to address the growing effects of climate change and tackle food insecurity through a new Africa-Australia Partnership for Climate Responsive Agriculture.

Scheduled to be announced at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, where climate change is a key focus, the Partnership will leverage Australian expertise to enhance the climate resilience of farming communities in Africa.

Administered by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) over six years, the initial funding of $11.9 million will support the creation of new bilateral research projects and training programs in close partnership with local collaborators.

ACIAR is already backing significant research in Eastern and Southern Africa, focusing on enhancing sustainable crop and livestock systems, forest management practices, and plant biosecurity to promote commercial opportunities for smallholder farmers.

The Partnership will enable ACIAR to broaden its operations into Northern and Western Africa while facilitating capacity development and innovative collaborations throughout the continent.
