Telecel Group, the majority owner of Vodafone Ghana, has added 300 new 4G sites across Ghana’s regions. This network expansion highlights Telecel’s growth strategy since acquiring 70% of Vodafone Ghana earlier this year.
In February 2023, Telecel purchased Vodafone’s Ghana operations for an undisclosed amount but maintained the Vodafone brand. The government of Ghana retains a 30% stake in the local holding company.
Telecel stated it is fully committed to enhancing the acquired network quality as part of a broader strategic expansion plan. The company’s COO, Malek Atrissi, said the 4G rollout is a pivotal step toward sustained nationwide growth.
Vodafone Ghana CEO Patricia Obo-Nai added their vision is to improve Ghanaians’ digital experiences continuously. Bringing 4G+ offers customers even faster speeds and richer connectivity.
Currently, only about 15% of Ghana’s mobile users are on 4G, with most still utilising 3G. Vodafone Ghana had under 5% of subscribers on 4G as of June 2023.
MTN Ghana dominates with over 67% market share and 21% 4G adoption. Smaller players, AirtelTigo and Glo Mobile, lack 4G entirely. This landscape led regulators to enforce policies on MTN’s dominance.
Recent technology neutrality rules also enable more 4G deployment to aid competitiveness. Telecel thanked Ghana’s government for assisting in its rapid 4G expansion.
Since entering Ghana, Telecel has moved swiftly to modernise Vodafone’s network and close the 4G gap. Offering faster speeds aligns with its mission of enriching digital experiences for Ghanaians.
Telecel’s major 4G investment displays its commitment to improving services in Ghana’s dynamic telecoms market. As data usage grows, 4G connectivity will be critical for Vodafone Ghana to compete and win more subscribers
