According to a business release, ayoba, a messaging app partially owned by South African telecom giant MTN, had surpassed 20 million monthly active users in December 2022, indicating a 100% increase over the same period last year when it reached 10 million monthly active users.
Simfy Africa Pty Ltd launched ayoba in May 2019, and the company said it had 1 million monthly active users by November 2019. Currently, ayoba’s platform includes messaging, music, games, money transfers, and calls.
The company says that the platform, which it calls “Africa’s Super App,” has grown a lot in all areas this year. For example, its music streaming service has grown 174% in local content and streams.
In December 2022, messaging apps grew by 125% (in terms of messages sent), games by 208% (in terms of plays), and MicroApps by 322%. (sessions). According to data released by the company, Ayoba users also shared 85 million stories with their friends and family about what they were doing and what they were interested in.
The app is available worldwide, but its most important markets are Nigeria, Cameroon, South Africa, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda, and the Republic of Congo. The company didn’t say how many users were in each market or how fast it was growing, so Techloy can’t be sure which country is its biggest market.
