TechInAfrica – Shell Global Innovation Prize has selected 21 finalists in which two of them are Nigerian startups. To be specific, the prize is called the Shell LiveWIRE Top Ten Innovator Awards, a global competition to recognize and award businesses with excellent innovation as well as facilitate entrepreneurs to get recognized and shined on a global platform.
These two Nigerian startups are FarmToJuince and Foods Nig. Ltd that produces juice and processes any waste into livestock feed using a biogas digester to create energy; and Basiled Energy Ventures that provides solar lamps, solar installation maintenance, and repair, as well as solar battery recycling services.
The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC)’s Managing Director and Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor, said: “The two Nigerian startups have come up with creative ideas on energy efficiency, food, and agriculture and join 19 others from other countries to vie for the prestigious prize.”
The public can vote for the shortlisted businesses which started from September 9 – 18, 2019 on the Shell LiveWIRE website.
The LiveWIRE is a youth enterprise development program providing training and fund to young people to start and grow their own businesses. The program was first launched in Nigeria in 2003, aiming at empowering young entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas in creating sustainable businesses and contributing to employment and income-generating opportunities.
The winners and two runners up will be awarded in different categories, including & Agriculture, Energy & Mobility, and Sustainable Future. The winners will receive US$20,000 while runners up will receive US$10,000. Additionally, there will be an Outstanding Achievement Award winner who will receive US$10,000.
The Top Ten Innovators will get direct mentoring from Shell staff and the chance to connect and benefit from vast linkages across Shell’s global network.
“We’re inspired to see these 21 finalists from around the world whose businesses work towards providing circular solutions that help to achieve zero waste,” said Executive Vice President of Shell Global Commercial Huibert Vigeveno.
“Transitioning to a circular economy can help to protect the environment and deliver positive change to society. Working with innovators like these esteemed finalists will allow businesses, communities, and society to move faster towards achieving these goals,” Vigeveno concluded.
