Uganda health fintech wins $250K Award

Uganda health-focused fintech, ClinicPesa recently won $250,000 through the Swiss-Re Foundation competition – People’s Choice Award.  The startup offers improved healthcare access to the uninsured in Uganda and the region.

Presently, Uganda does not have a national healthcare insurance cover for its citizens forcing them to go out of pocket to pay for their healthcare. ClinicPesa thus leverages offers flexible saving programs that leverage on mobile money infrastructure in addition to loan top-ups that enable access to high-quality healthcare services.

ClinicPesa is a portfolio company of Villgro Africa and has also received previous funding from GIZ, D-Labs, MIT, and FSDU totaling US$ 500,000. An expected launch of their final product with MTN Uganda and Equity Bank Limited is soon expected. This partnership also includes over  1,400 facilities of hospitals, pharmacies, and clinics.

ClinicPesa also has a maternal screening offering. The company is working on a US$2 million syndicated round to boost business growth in Uganda.
