uKheshe Launches a Life Benefits Card Targeting Unbanked Consumers in SA

TechInAfrica – A South Africa-based QR cash card, uKheshe has launched a life benefits card called uKheshe Life. The new card offers all features that uKheshe QR card does and new features including hospital and life benefits for the cardholders.

According to uKheshe’s Co-Founder, Clayton Hayward, uKheshe Life offers essential cover for the unbanked and underbanked consumers in South Africa. Hayward stated: “This latest innovation from uKheshe provides health and accidental insurance cover for as little as R60 per month. These benefits are instantly activated when a user signs up for an uKheshe Life card and is deducted automatically from the user’s uKheshe wallet.”

Hayward said that the uKheshe Life card is ideal for over 11 million unbanked consumers as well as small business owners who want to offer affordable benefits for their employees.

“Not only can you use it to pay someone, but the user will receive all the benefits, including accidental cover, should an incident occur on the job or at home,” Hayward said.

uKheshe Life’s consumers are not required to provide a bank account nor undergo medical tests and complete paperwork. Instead, they will get R 5,000 funeral cover and a hospital guarantee. If an accident happens, a consumer will get R 100,000 accidental and emergency fund while they will also get R 100,000 of death and disability benefits.

uKheshe card was launched in November last year, allowing consumers to make and receive payments using a QR code card and a smartphone with an installed app. It does not require its consumers to make a bank account. They can make withdrawals at any Pick ‘n Pay PayPoint till and use the payments to purchase goods.

Consumers can sign up for the uKheshe card by dialing *120*82274# using their smartphone and simply just follow the instruction. It does not require airtime and even if a card is required, a virtual one will be created and linked automatically to the consumer’s mobile phone number. Consumers can also order uKheshe Life card via the uKheshe shop.
