For the first time, the African football will utilize Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in 2018 CAF Super Cup. The games will kick-off on Saturday and TP Mazembe will face Wydad Athletic Club for opening matches.
.Besides, the 017 Caf Confederation Cup winners will meet head-on with the 2017Caf Champion League winners and use the VAR technology. Both FIFA and IFAD approved the use of VAR technology in the 2018 CAF which will take place in Casablanca. The implementation of the VAR technology utilizes a series of technical offline tests.
Speaking to Amr Fahmy, CAF General Secretary, he said that African football officials made a good move to towards adoption of VAR technology across the continent. The positive impact of the technology will also be manifested in all games in the continent.
Additionally, Eddy Maillet Caf’s refereeing manager embraced the technology and noted that capable officials will take charge during the matches. The main reason for backing the application of VAR is to maximize the benefits while minimizing external interference. Moreover, considering the successful series of trials, the system expressed better results worth adoption in all Africa football matches.
